2011 Water Purification Project in Costa Rica
In March of 2011, a small group of Peninsula Rotary Club members travelled to Costa Rica and joined our partner club, the Escazu Rotary Club, in visiting ten schools and discussing water treatment with the school administrations. The result was a $20,000 Rotary Foundation Matching Grant to install purification stations for the incoming water at these schools. The purification stations are simple, compact, and easily-maintained.
Do these water purification stations really do any good? Well, in 2009, almost as an afterthought, this equipment was installed at Carmen Lyra School in the same area as part of a larger project to provide a sewage treatment system. After the purification equipment was put in, the absentee rate at the school dropped by 85 percent.
The 2011 project for ten schools will be helping almost 7,000 children.
The photographs below, sent to us by the Escazu Club, summarize the installation procedure at one school.
...and below are photos showing the names of eight of the schools receiving water treatment.
